HAUGBPS 10th
Anniversary Competition
The Jubilee Sailing Trust owns
and operates two tall ships,
LORD NELSON, and
TENACIOUS. These ships are
the only two vessels in the
world that have been purpose-
designed and built for crews of
mixed physical abilities to sail
side by side on equal terms.
With some fifteen applicants,
we had an impressive
response to our 10th
Anniversary Competition.
The winner was Mrs Ruth
Hollingshead,, of Carisbrook,
An active member of the Isle of
Wight Society for the Blind.
She won the prize of a 5 day
trip in July, on the sail training
ship the Lord Nelson.
The Best Read Book Club
Channel Four's Richard & Judy show
has joined forces with the National
Library for the Blind (NLB) to
include blind readers.
Now in its third year, the book club
will feature ten books for viewers to
read and then join a national debate
with the famous pair.
However, for the first time blind fans
will be able to take part as all
publishers involved will fund the
transcription of their books into
braille by the NLB
The NLB is producing each braille
book in time for the appropriate
Richard and Judy programme. Blind
people wishing to borrow or buy a
copy, or who wish to find out more
about the initiative, should contact
theNLB on

or email:

Large print or audio versions of the
books may be in public libraries or
available through RNIB's Talking Book
Seivice, but remember only 5% of all
books are published in accessible
formats. The website:

Chip & PIN - RNIB's Campaign
You may have heard that by the
14th February
retailers will only accept
debit and credit cards
that have a chip. That
doesn't mean that you
have to use a PIN if you
find it difficult to use.
However if you do want
to carry on signing,
instead of entering a PIN
into a machine, you must
ask your bank or credit
card company to issue
you with a Chip and
Signature card instead
a Chip and PIN card.
Some retailers are
getting confused but
when you insert your
Chip and Signature card
into the machine at the
Till it will actually tell the
staff to request a
signature rather than a
PIN number. If you have

OPEN YOUR EYES
RNIB's Open Your Eyes
campaign aims to bring an end to
preventable sight loss in the UK
by 2020. Open Your Eyes
reveals that more than half of all
sight loss is avoidable and that
1.9 million people with diabetes
and 250,000 people with early-
stage glaucoma are at risk of
losing their sight. This is in
addition to the two million people
in the UK already with sight
problems.
The situation is going to get much
worse with the explosion in the
numbers of people with diabetes
and as a result of the ageing of
our population. RNIB wants the
Government to invest in a large-
scale public eye health awareness
campaign on the importance of
regular eye tests. Regular eye
tests are vital for everyone & can
save your sight. Open Your Eyes
states nine out of ten people fear
losing their sight above any other
sense but one in three still failed
to have an eye test in the last
two years.
Last year HAUGBPS carried a
similar message into local schools
with its EYE CARE project.
